About Our Bell Choirs
The starting age of beginner bells is 8 how ever depending on the ability and maturity level of the child as young as 6 may be considered. This group is open to any age adult (our current elder is 80!). No background in music is required. At this level we learn how to ring the bell, bell techniques, counting and beginning note reading. We play entry level music that is usually slow or simple patterns. We practice one or two songs at a time and rehearsal is paced to the most inexperienced member.
Advanced bells requires knowledge in reading music and/or experience in playing bells. At this level we learn more advanced bell ringing techniques, meter changes, tempo changes and complex patterns that require weaving or passing bells. We play advanced level music that can be fast or complex patterns. We practice many songs at a time and rehearsal is much faster paced. Members are expected to retain and build upon information learned each week. To move from the beginner bells to the advanced bells the member must be comfortable with the new pace and more complex music and the director feels that the member is ready. This is usually a joint decision. In many cases members play in both groups.
We also do small group ensembles among the current members, and groups are usually defined based on availability, experience, and/or complexity of the music. These are more advanced and technically difficult.
